Wheels for May 27 by John Kanelis
Jeff Lester is an experienced Amarillo police officer who now has a boatload of FBI knowledge under his belt. Jeff, a captain with the APD and head of the department's detective division, shared some pictures and information about his recent training session with the FBI Academy in Quantico, Va. He was back east for 11 weeks -- living, sleeping, working and talking police techniques with colleagues around the country. Jeff learned about behavioral analysis, leadership, organizational development and a host of other disciplines. There was physical training, firearms instruction -- you name it. Jeff has been with APD for 34 years and is married to a Randall County sheriff's sergeant, Lynne. So, police work is part of Jeff's life. Thanks for the great program, Jeff -- and welcome back.
We're getting down to cases, ladies and gents, with the Foundation Drawing pot. It's now approaching $3,000. Molly Barney had the "winning ticket," but drew something other than the Ace of Spades. Remember: You draw the Ace of Spades and you take home half of what's in the pot; the rest of it goes to the Foundation and helps fund its great work around the world. There's only a handful of cards left. The Big Card is in there somewhere.
Hold-Up is getting started soon. We still have some open dates available for Rotarians to take part in an outstanding public relations effort. Beginning June 9, we're going to "arrest" unsuspecting visitors at the Texas Department of Transportation visitors information bureau at Interstate 40 and Airport Boulevard. The evening begins with a dinner at a local restaurant; it continues to Palo Duro Canyon to watch the musical "Texas"; and it concludes when the host Rotarians take our guests back one of our hotels. John Kanelis is this year's Hold-Up chairman/coordinator. Call him at 345-3358 if you want to take part. The Hold-Up will run for 11 consecutive Wednesdays until the end of this year's run of the musical. Sign up and take part.
Kudos belong this week to: Doyle Moore for leading us in song; to Pam Rushing and Gay Chalfant for accompanying us on the piano; John Kanelis for the invocation; David Norris for introducing guests and visiting Rotarians; to Dale Bippus and JeffNeely for greeting us as we arrived; to Peter Boyce for selling tickets; and, of course, to past president Mark Haworth, for filling in as presiding officer. Thanks to you all.
